Essential Job Duties
The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) seeks applications from highly qualified scientists for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Food Microbiology. This position carries an 80% Research and 20% Teaching split. The research focus should be in microbial food safety and the proposed areas are broad and include, but are not limited to: animal, human, and food system microbiome; chemical and physical modes of foodborne pathogen inactivation; biofilms; advanced microbial detection and characterization methods, including WGS; non-cultivable and emerging foodborne pathogens (e.g., viruses, parasitic protozoa, Cronobacter, etc.); microbial risk analysis; and incorporation of artificial intelligence technology for enhancing food safety and traceability.
The successful candidate is expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program with both individual and collaborative (multidisciplinary) work. Collaborations are to extend the gamut including fellow academic scientists; industry and government stakeholders; and growers, processors, and entrepreneurs, especially those in North Carolina.
The candidate will actively seek extramural funding for their research program and serve in leadership roles on state, local, national, and international committees and boards. The incumbent will also be expected to actively participate in undergraduate and graduate-level teaching activities in food microbiology and safety.
The successful applicant is expected to develop both research and teaching programs. The research program to be developed will be nationally recognized and extramurally funded through fundamental and/or applied research in areas that address critical data gaps, new technologies, and stakeholder needs in the area of food microbiology. A research focus on pathogens is expected, which could include but is not limited to biofilms, difficult-to-cultivate pathogens, molecular detection of infectious pathogens, etc.
The successful applicant will work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary manner with other professionals within and outside of the university. Candidates will be expected to mentor undergraduate, graduate students, and post-docs in research. The initial teaching expectation is 1-2 graduate/undergraduate courses per year in the area of food microbiology. Specifically, the teaching responsibilities may include an undergraduate food microbiology lecture and/or lab and potentially a graduate-level course on advanced molecular microbiology methods. The successful applicant will also be expected to serve on committees within the department, college, and/or university.
